Another leaf book from The Book Club of California, extra limited due to the available leaves from the Herbal; included in the Exhibition of Western Books for that year (Rounce & Coffin Club). The text by Carey Bliss discusses the Herbal itself, the history of early published herbals, the life of Flemish physician and botanist Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585), and the influential work of the original printer Christopher Plantin (1520-1589). The pages of the leaf in this copy are numbered 504, 503, and feature woodcuts of Bona siue Phaselus major, and Fegopyron, from Pemptades.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in grey-green cloth, title and illustration in green to the upper board, title in gilt to backstrip, red endpapers, title-page in black and terra cotta, reproductions of woodcuts from the Herbal throughout the text including portraits of Dodoens and Plantin; type is Janson linotype, machine made paper, folio size (14.25" by 9.75"), pagination: [i-viii] 1-28 [1 colophon], limited edition, one of 385 copies, with prospectus of one large sheet folded to four pages, in the original cream paper dust jacket.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, the covers clean and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The dust jacket has a few minor chips at edges but is overall near fine; the prospectus near fine with original folds and a few shallow creases towards the edges.
