John DePol (1913-2004) is an American wood engraver out of New York; throughout his prolific career he has collaborated with numerous private presses on limited editions, and has also produced many books through his own Endgrain Press. Although DePol is best known as a wood engraver for illustrated books, he also has experience in etching and lithography. This bibliographical catalogue, compiled while the DePol was still alive and producing, was made possible through collaboration with the artist, his friends and institutions; it is well-researched and thorough, and showcases the genious of the artist.
___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black cloth and patterned red paper covered boards, backstrip lettered in white, dark-gray endpapers with facsimile of DePol's signature used as a pattern, title-page printed in black and red, wood engraved frontis, numerous examples of DePol's illustrations bound terminally (both single and two-color prints); Adobe Caslon type, Mohawk Superfine paper, folio size (12.25" by 9 1/8"), [1-8] 9-162 [1 colophon] pp., limited edition, one of 400 copies, signed by John DePol at the colophon; housed in a dark-gray paper slipcase, black paper label with white lettering on the spine.
___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The slipcase also fine, strong and sturdy, clean and without wear.
