A Short History of The English People

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1894-1895. Illustrated Edition. Hardcover. Four volumes (complete), small quarto size, approx. 1906 pp. Near fine. Item #33330910

A lovely half-leather set by J.R. Green, this the first illustrated edition. As Mrs. Green wrote in the Preface: "It was a favourite wish of my husband's to see English History interpreted and illustrated by pictures which should tell us how men and things appeared to the lookers-on of their own day...". Of course, this is now well over 125 years later, so that we in turn can catch our own glimpse of the past.

The set is indeed lavishly illustrated, with mostly monochrome but also some full-colour plates; a delightful way to browse through the history of the English.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in half bright led leather over marbled boards, the spine compartments lettered and richly decorated in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, Mr. Hillyer's Ex-Libris on the front pastedown of each volume; bindings small quarto size (10 1/8" by 7"), continously paginated with 1906 numbered pages.

___CONDITION: Volumes near fine, the leather smooth and supple, the boards clean, straight corners with minimal rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright, and other than the Ex-Libris' entirely free of prior owner markings; a minute speck or two of wear, but overall a near fine set.

___PROVENANCE: With the Ex-Libris of Clarence W. Hillyer (1869-1949), alumnus of Princeton, was a life member of the New York Historical Society, life member of the New York Athletic Club, and member of both the Union League Club of New York and the Bell Haven Club of Greenwich.
