A lovely publishers trade binding (designer unknown) of a peacock with a long, sweeping tail embellished in gilt. A rather unusual publication in that the text is printed in blue ink throughout, including the chapter tailpieces.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in light blue cloth over boards, the stamped cover design in green and gilt, gilt lettering and publisher's device on the spine, a bible verse in gilt on the back board, tissue-guarded frontispiece a half-tone reproduction of a photograph of the author with his signature in facsimile below, title page in blue and red, copyright date of 1901 (no date on the title page), please note that at least one of the poems written in the "dialect" attributed to the enslaved people over a hundred years ago; binding small octavo size (7 7/8" by 5 3/8"), pagination: .[i-vi] [1-2] 3-137.

___CONDITION: A bit better than very good overall, structurally strong with a square text block and solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the binding mostly clean with a single small spot of soil on the back board and very light evidence of old damp at the bottom of the back board (no wrinkling, just a slight difference in sheen to the cloth), light wear at the head and tail of the spine and the corners. A very good binding with a near fine interior, with the peacock (as is only right) taking center stage.
