Loyalty Cook Book; Compiled and Published by Santa Rosa Parlor No. 217, Native Daughters of the Golden West

Santa Rosa, Sonoma County: [printed by the Rosensteel Printing Company, Stockton, California], 1932. First Edition. Stiff boards. First printing, octavo size, 196 pp. Good +. Item #22063001

This the first printing of the cook book put out by the Santa Rosa chapter of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, which was later reprinted several times. Per the Foreword: "This book contains favorite recipes of members of the Native Daughters of the Golden West. No claim of originality is made for the majority of the recipes. They are, for the most part, simply time-tested favorites of members of the order..." Although the book was published by the Santa Rosa chapter ("parlor"), the recipes are from chapters throughout California, each recipe with the name of the woman who submitted it and her chapter.

Many of the recipes clearly show the influence of the southwest; La Brujitas Mexican, Chili, Tamale, Chille Rellenos, Spanish Beans, Calachi ("Squash, Spanish Style"), and "California Pudding" are included, along with more traditional recipes. Arranged by type, the chapters range from "Beans" to "Wafers". The recipes begin with "Grand Officers' Favorite Recipes" (Pineapple Wheel Cake for the Grand President) and "Past Grand Officers' Favorite Recipes".
