Pat the Bunny

[New York]: [Simon & Schuster], c. 1940. Kunhardt, Dorothy. First Edition. Hardcover. First edition, second issue, twenty-fourmo size, [16] pp., in a custom box. Near fine. Item #22010701

Dorothy Kunhardt (née Meserve, 1901-1979) is best known for this work, although she authored almost fifty books during her lifetime.

As noted author Chris Loker wrote in "One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature" (Grolier Club, 2014), "Pat the Bunny" is "[o]ften called the first 'touch and feel' book in the United States" and "was based on an educational philosophy expounded three hundred years earlier by Comenius." Going through the book, the child is invited to "pat the bunny" (white faux fur material within the outline of the rabbit), raise a small piece of fabric to "play peek-a-boo", shake the button box (which has resulted in most copies no longer having the buttons, this copy still has such), feel "Daddy's scratchy face" (which had some sand glued on), etc.

A perennial favourite, "Pat the Bunny" had sold over 6 million copies as of 2006, "making it the number-6 all-time bestselling children's hardcover book" (n.b., info and quote from Wiki).

___DESCRIPTION: Decorated pink paper boards with an illustration of the white bunny on the front, black lettering on the front and spine, scattered blue and white dots forming a border design on both boards and spine, "bound from four sheets of card each cut and butterfly-folded Chinese style, the inner folds pasted together so that two leaves form a single page printed on both outer (visible) sides" (per Loker); twenty-fourmo size (5 1/2" by 4 1/8"), [16] pp. Now housed in a custom box, tan leather spine with title in gilt, sides covered in pink paper with some decoration on the "front" to match the dots on the boards, lined with archival paper.

___CONDITION: Near fine, the paper covering the boards and spine mostly clean (other than a few minor spots) and largely unworn (we had a professional restore the joints, name available upon request), each of the "touch and feel" components present (including the buttons), the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; miniscule wear to the corners, some of the sand on "Daddy's scratchy face" now gone but most still there, "Judy's Book" with a shallow unintended crease on the final page (caused by part of the "rear wrap" not having been glued to its page). Even with its few faults, still a near fine copy of this timeless and classic children's book.

___CITATION: Loker no. 83, which notes that the first issue had a "squeaker" which was then replaced by a box of buttons, which this volume has. Later printings had a scented page which replaced the box of buttons.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
