Last Tales

New York: Random House, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, octavo size, 352 pp. Near Fine / Near Fine. Item #21092402

Isak Dinesen (nom de plume, Baroness Karen Christenze von Blixen-Finecke of Rungstedlund, nee Dinesen, 1885-1962) is likely best-remembered today for "Out of Africa", a fictionalized recounting of the life she led with her husband operating a coffee plantation, and for her short story, "Babette's Feast", both of which were adapted into Academy Award-winning films.

This collection includes stories written as early as the 1930s. While several of the stories garnered critical acclaim, the work as a whole was described by "Time" magazine as "a group of Gothic fiction" (n.b., per Wiki). The publisher, on the dust jacket flap, describes it as one in which Dinesen "again casts her magical spell in prose and...offers twelve tales in which fantasy and reality are harmoniously intermingled."
