New York, London, Toronto: Longmans, Green and Co., 1961. Laune, Paul. First Edition. Hardcover. First printing, octavo size, 190 pp., inscribed by Jack Steffan to Kathi Lee Kling. Near fine / good +. Item #21070301
Jack Steffan, pen name for Alice Jacqueline Kennedy Steffan (b. 1907), wrote stories for young adults set in the West. She was introduced to the West and life on a ranch as a young girl, riding bareback on her "Indian horse", an Appaloosa such as the one featured in this story.
Inscribed by the author "To / Kathi Lee Kling / with admiration / and affection / Jack Steffan / Lewiston, Idaho / August 14, 1961", the book has the Ex-Libris of Kathi Kling on the front pastedown with the silhoutte of a horse's head. While we cannot be certain, this is likley the Kathi (Kathy) Kling mentioned on the web sites of the "Lewiston Tribune" and "Lewiston Roundup"; she won a Racing prize in 1963 and was elected "Princess" of the "Lewiston Roundup Royalty" in 1964. One can easily see the author, a lover of horses herself, being an admirer of another young girl who shared that passion.
