John Holbrook "Jack" Vance (1916-2013) was a prolific mystery, fantasy and SciFi writer, and his work garnered numerous awards: the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement (1984), the 15th Grand Master of The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (1997), inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, winner of Hugo Awards and an Edgar Award.

This trilogy is set within a larger fictional universe of Vance's, the Gaean Reach. Each of the three novels is named for one of its worlds; a fourth novel was planned but never written. With chillingly lovely artwork on the dust jackets by Ned Dameron, who also provided dust jacket cover art for some of the Stephen King "Dark Tower" series, among other genre works.
