San Francisco: Printed at the Grabhorn Press for The Book Club of California, 1940. Angelo, Valenti. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. One of 300 copies, octavo size, [52] pp. Fine. Item #210318008

A collection of poems from David Herbert Lawrence's (1885-1930) New Mexico period, all written during his stay there; with the exception of "Eagle in New Mexico" all of the poems were published here for the first time. With an insightful foreword by fellow poet Robinson Jeffers, a "note" by Freida Lawrence (1879-1956), wife of the poet, and a lovely illustration on the title page by Valenti Angelo.

While perhaps best known to most today for his "Lady Chatterley's Lover", Lawrence was a prolific writer of novels, essays, plays, poetry, and literary criticism. While most of his contemporaries were critical of his work, a friend, writing of him shortly after his death, summed up his life this way: "He wrote something like three dozen books, of which even the worst page dances with life that could be mistaken for no other man's, while the best are admitted, even by those who hate him, to be unsurpassed."
