Puss in Boots

Mill Valley, CA: Carol Cunningham, Sunflower Press, 1989. Cunningham, Carol. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 24 of 30 copies, miniature, 40 pp., signed at the colophon by Carol Cunningham. Fine. Item #20111103

The story of "Puss in Boots" has been told for centuries, with one of the earliest recorded versions by Giovanni Francesco Straparola published in the middle of the sixteenth century. Noted author Chris Loker includes it in her list of "seven of the best-known Western European 'fairy tales' " in her entry for "Histoires ou Contes du emps passe", in her 2014 publication "One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature".

This lovely version was designed and printed by Carol Cunningham of the Sunflower Press in an edition of only 30 copies; in the colophon she states wryly: "[t]his book is my first (possibly my last?) attempt to design and print a book on the computer...[I] have been struggling for three months to get the type set into columns and printed. It would have been easier by hand. However, the title page and illustrations are letter-press printed."

With illustrations hand-coloured by Cunningham, she has produced a charming rendition of the tale of this crafty feline who gained the hand of a Princess for his master after many adventures.
