A spiritual romance themed around a man's fight to attain eternal life, with parables and stories to spark the imagination. Based on the original text written around 100 A.D. in India, this version from the text translated and printed by William Caxton sometime around 1484, and which forms part of his magnum opus, "The Golden Legend".
The lovely illustrations "are from various India sources, appropriate for this legend....[with] two or more colors on every text page, plus many initials...which have been hand-colored by Dorothy Allen" (n.b., from prospectus).
This fifty-second limited edition from The Allen Press; published the year following the Allen Press Bibliography, hence not included therein.
___DESCRIPTION: Original blue-gray cloth stamped with the title in vermilion at upper board and backstrip, vermilion endpapers, pictorial title-page in vermilion, purple and mustard, two full-page engravings, four in text, numerous initials, running headlines in vermilion; handset Menhart Uncial and Garamond Bold types, handmade all-rag paper watermarked especially for the press by Richard de Bas mill in France, quarto size (10.75" by 7.25"), [1-8] 9-52  pp., limited edition, one of 140 copies, in a clear acetate dust jacket. With the original prospectus, a single sheet folded once to four pages, the front the same wonderful illustration as on the title page, the second page blank, third page with a hand-coloured initial and title in red with the usual information about the book which continues on the final page.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, the covers clean and without wear, the corners perfectly straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. The acetate jacket near fine, a closed tear at the head of the spine and several small chips where the panels meet the flaps; the prospectus fine, clean and without wear.
