Lawrenceburg, Ind. Privately Printed [for] A.D. Cook, Inc., 1935. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 10 of 200 copies, octavo size, 15 pp., in slipcase. Near fine. Item #20101501
Originally published in 1909, this lovely tale was written by Raymond Macdonald Alden (1873-1924). With three lovely line-drawn vignettes but no attribution.
" 'Why the Chimes Rang' is the story of a grand old church with beautiful chimes which mysteriously ring out every Christmas Eve whenever someone places an especially pleasing gift on the altar as an offering, and how a miracle occurs after the chimes have fallen silent for years. The story is a sort of variation on the Jongleur de Notre Dame and Little Drummer Boy themes" (n.b., from Wiki).
Our research shows that this exact publication (in terms of binding, paper, and illustrations) was privately printed by others; so, although this printing is one of 200, there may be an unknown number of other copies. This version printed "for distribution to the friends of A.D. Cook, Incorporated", a company which provided water systems, such as wells.
___DESCRIPTION: Brown paper over boards with a brown cloth spine, gold lettering and a single star on the front (difficult to see against the brown unless held to the light at an angle), the three vignettes in brown on the title page and as head- and tail-pieces, limitation statement with number "10" hand-written; octavo size (8 1/16" by 5.25"), pagination: [1-4] 5-13 [14, blank] [15, colophon]. In a slipcase, presumably original, of cardboard covered with matching brown paper and lined with mottled green paper.
___CONDITION: Volume near fine, with clean boards, straight corners with minute specks of rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some light marks to the fore-edges due to the slipcase being a bit too tight and a few light marks to the spine, else fine. The slipcase is better than very good, strong and sturdy, some overall light wear but no tears; as mentioned, the case is a bit too small and therefore the book must be carefully inserted and removed.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
