Samuel L. Clemens, better known to the world as "Mark Twain", (1835-1910) created some of the best-loved characters of American fiction, including Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. In addition to his many novels, he also was a prolific writer of short pieces, or "sketches".

Per the bibiography, this work contains sixty-six "paragraphic and short-sketch items", many of which had previously been published in other venues, mostly magazine periodicals. It does, "of course" include "Jumping Frog" now "restored to the English tongue after martyrdom in the French."
