Flowers from Sunlight and Shade

New York: White, Stokes, & Allen, 1885. Hardcover. Octavo size, 128 pp. Very good +. Item #20091601

A delightful volume of poetry paired with lovely floral chromolithographs, in a gorgeous publisher's decorate trade binding.

Susie Barstow Skelding (1857-1934) selected the poems and produced the illustrations, this volume one of a series she produced with flowers as the theme. The poems appear to 21st-century eyes to be somewhat dated, but many of the authors were well-known and highly-regarded in their day, including Bayard Taylor, James Russell Lowell, William Cullen Bryant, W.D. Howells, and Mary Mapes Dodge, among others.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full green cloth over boards, the front richly decorated wtih silver, gilt and black, the spine with a gilt debossed pattern around the lettering, all edges gilt, green floral-patterened endpapers, chromolithograph frontispiece one of the twelve bound in throughout, most still with their tissue guards, title page vignette of a man reading amidst stacks of books, the poems by various authors as set forth above; octavo size (9 1/8" by 8 1/8"), 128 pp. (count includes the twelve illustrations).

___CONDITION: Better than very good and could probably be deemed near fine; the boards clean other than a few stay marks, the gilt and silver bright and unrubbed, the corners only gently bumped and, while not rubbed through, the cloth at the corners has faded to white, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the gilt on the text block edges bright and clean, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the head and tail of the spine gently bumped and the cloth again faded to a whitish shade (please see pictures and request more if needed), and a hint of sunning to the word "Flowers" on the front board. Even with its few faults, overall a lovely example.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
