London: Printed for T. Cadell, jun. and W. Davies... 1798. First Edition. Leather bound. Octavo size, 544 pp. Near fine. Item #20091001
The Turkish Empire (Ottoman Empire) ended the Byzantine Empire in 1453 with the conquest of Constantinople; for almost seven centures they controlled much of Northern Africa, Western Asia, and Southeast Europe (n.b., info from Wiki).
The author of this work, William Eton, Esquire, per the title page was "many years resident in Turkey and in Russia." The title page lays out the areas considered: the Government; the State of the Provinces; Their Efforts Toward Emancipation; the Causes of the Decline of Turkey; the British Commerce with Turkey; and "Many Other Particulars". While some viewpoints may be outdated according to 21st-century values and norms, still a fascinating glimpse into how the British viewed the Turkish Empire in the eighteenth century.
