Who amongst us has not read and loved at least some of the wonderful sonnets of Shakespeare? The sonnets of William Shakespeare contain some of the greatest and most memorable poetry in the English language and they continue to the read and cherished today.

This publication by the Cheshire House opens with an "Introduction" in the form of three sonnets written by Joseph Auslander (1897-1965), the first Poet Laureate (1937-1941) of the United States.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full red leather over boards, triple narrow ruled gilt borders on both boards, gilt lettering and small decorations on the spine, top edge gilt, fore-edge uncut, half-title in red, decorative border on the title page, running red rules at the top of each page, the first Sonnet with a decorative ruled headpiece and title in red, most signatures unopened, colophon in red with number hand-written in red, this no. 509 of 1200 copies; sixmo size (6.25" by 5"), pagination: [i-xii] [1-154] [colophon]. In publisher's slipcase of sturdy cardboard covered with red paper, lined with black paper, ivory paper spine label with black lettering and rules.

___CONDITION: Fine overall, the leather smooth and supple, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright with many signatures unopened, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a few extremely small light marks on the leather, else fine. The slipcase better than very good, strong and sturdy with no splits, there is overall light soil and an old dampstain towards the bottom of the spine (not affecting the book) and light wear at the opening.
