Robert Herrick (bapt. 1591-1674) wrote just at the end of the Elizabethan period; best known for the collection of 1200 poems entitled "Hesperides" (contained in the first three volumes of this set) it contains the well-known line "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may".

Humbert Wolfe (1885-1940), author of the lengthy preface, was one of the most popular British authors of the 1920s (n.b., per Wiki). The set with lovely, hand-coloured frontis illustrations and decorations by Albert Rutherston (1881-1953), who in addition to illustrating books and posters, was also a stage and costume designer.

___DESCRIPTION: Full vellum over boards, gilt lettering on the spines, top edges gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, a different hand-coloured frontis illustration in each volume, each volume with an ending decoration in black and white, Volumes I and IV with an opening decoration in red, Volumes I through III comprise the 1200 poems titled collectively "Hesperides", Volume IV includes "Noble Numbers and Additional Poems", Volume IV also includes "An Alphabetical List of First Lines" for the set; handset Fell type on mould-made paper, duodecimo size (7 5/8 by 5 1/4"), pagination: Volume I, [i-viii] ix-lxxxiv [lxxxv-lxxxvi] lxxxvii-lxxxix [3 blanks] [1-2] 3-90; Volume II, [i-viii] ix-xiv, [1-2] 3-175; Volume III [i-viii] ix-xv [xvi] [1-2] 3-179; and Volume IV, [i-viii] ix-xii, [1-2] 3-144.

___CONDITION: Near fine; the vellum binding smooth and without wear, the corners straight and unrubbed, the gilt top edges bright, strong, sturdy text blocks with all hinges solid, the interiors are clean and bright, and the set is entirely free of prior owner markings; overall light soiling, toning to the endpapers (likely from the glue used), and very light dustiness to the fore-edges. Overall a lovely set
