Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) had a distinctive style evocative of a mystical, gothic Victorian era, and his vast body of work includes over one hundred books written by himself, as well as those by many well-known authors such as T. S. Eliot, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, H. G. Wells, and Virginia Woolf (n. b., info from the Edward Gorey House website) - and, of course, this work.

"Dogear Wryde" is, of course, an anagram which Edward Gorey often employed for his postcard sets. This set, "Whatever Next?", is the first numbered edition (there were also 26 lettered sets), with Gorey's signature on the final card. Each illustration depicts (mostly) a portion of a house: a wall with the corner of a fireplace mantel, an empty picture frame near a window, a staircase with two empty boots near a door....but then there is...the gravestone....and the dangling rope...and...

___DESCRIPTION: A set of twelve cards with illustrations, a thirteenth card serving as the colophon which is numbered and signed by Edward Gorey, the twelve cards with an illustration on the front, back blank other than title and copyright date, the cards measuring 6" wide by 4" high; all enclosed within a white envelope, the front with a narrow black-ruled border (as one used to see on mourning cards) which encloses the title in a stylized form of building blocks, lightly written in pencil is the limitation number.

___CONDITION: The cards fine, absolutely clean and utterly without wear; the envelope near fine, clean other than a bit of light dustiness and the expected light creasing around the cards.
