The co-founder of San Francisco's landmark progressive book store and publisher City Lights, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021) is associated with the San Francisco Renaissance and the Beat movement in poetry that emerged there.

This poem from "A Coney Island of the Mind", first published in 1958 by New Directions, which is Ferlinghetti's most famous work. It has been translated into nine languages and has sold over a million copies, likely a response to the refreshing good humour and anti-establishment spirit it possesses.
