Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) is well-known and well-loved for his poisonously funny picture books which are complex, humorous, serious, and provocative. This work, "The Tuning Fork", is the first separate printing of the story which was first published in "Amphigorey Also". The story revolves around "Theodora [who] was a lonely child Whose presence drove her family wild". In this story, Theodora, although committing suicide, finds an - let us say, unusual - friend who helps her...

All of the names in the subtitle (which in the book are the first page of text, almost serving as a "title page") are spoofs; Gorey has signed this book at the colophon using one of the names, "Mrs. Regera Dowdy", being one of the many anagrams he used.
