A comprehensive resource of California's diverse bird population for both academics and amateurs, this book by prominent ornithologist William Leon Dawson (1873-1928) details the myriad species of birds in the state, and is filled with copious black-and-white photographs of the birds in their environment. The set has a total of fifteen coloured plates, most illustrated by Allan Brooks (1869-1946), who contributed numerous paintings of birds to ornithological books.

Incredibly popular when first published, several different versions were available and are still collected today.

___DESCRIPTION: Full green cloth, illustration and ruled borders in yellow, orange, and black with black and orange lettering on the front board, illustrations in black with yellow rules and orange lettering on the spine, top edge stained light brown, fore- and bottom edges rough cut, endpapers with photographs of birds in green, each volume with coloured illustrated frontispiece of a bird, with lettered tissue guards, title page in orange and black, each volume replete with black-and-white photographs, the set with a total of fifteen coloured plates (including frontispieces), with lettered tissue guards, with seven in Volume I, four in Volume II, and four in Volume III; quarto size (11" by 8"), pagination: Volume I: [6] [i-ii] iii-xvii [xviii] 1-696; Volume II: [i-vi] vii-xiii [xiv-xvi] 697-1432; Volume III: [i-vi] vii-xiii [xiv-xvi] 1433-2121.

___CONDITION: A near fine set, with clean boards, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; bumping to the heads and tails of the spines, the bottom corners are bumped and the cloth of several of the top corners beginning to fray, light off-setting to the free endpapers, and some small, shallow creases to the bottom corners of some pages throughout all volumes.
