A collection of beloved tales by Jacob and Wilheim Grimm (1785-1863 and 1786-1859, respectively), this two-volume set contains classic fairy tales such as "Repunzel", "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves", and "The Fisherman and His Wife".

Both volumes are illustrated by Maurice Sendak (1928-2012), a children's book author and illustrator best known for the enduring story "Where the Wild Things Are". Sendak's illustrations have a charming magic in their depiction of fantasy creatures and far-off lands.

___DESCRIPTION: Full brown cloth, gilt decoration on the front board, gilt rules and lettering on the spine, dark brown endpapers, frontispiece in each volume a black-and-white illustration by Maurice Sendak, full-page black-and-white illustrations by Sendak throughout both volumes; duodecimo size (7.25" by 5.75"), pagination: Volume I: [i-xii] [1-2] 3-168 [3]; Volume II: [i-xii] 169-332 [333-335]. Each volume in a paper dust jacket white and black lettering and a small decoration on the front panel inside colour rectangles, blue and brown for Volume I, orange and brown for Volume II, black lettering on the spine, brown rectangle and black ruled borders on the rear panel, a description of the books on the front and rear flaps; the dust jackets are unclipped and both have the original price of $12.95 on the front flap. Housed in a slipcase covered in orange paper, with white paper paste-down with black lettering and illustration by Sendak on one side.

___CONDITION: Volumes are fine overall, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors are clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; spines with light creases near the heads (likely from the binding process), else fine. The dust jackets are near fine, unclipped, clean, with light overall edgewear, spines are lightly sunned. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean overall with a few light soil marks and with some overall sunning.
