This elegant publication by the Book Club of California tells the history of the Catnach Press, a small nineteenth-century English press specialising in broadsides and catchpenny publications; the book includes an essay by noted bibliophile Percy Muir (1894-1979), on the penny broadsides of "Jemmy" (James) Catnach (per the bibliography) and several facsimiles of the work produced by the Press.

Printed by the highly regarded San Francisco-based Greenwood Press, which was run by the incomparable Jack Stauffacher (1920-2017), this volume is signed by Stauffacher on the colophon. The book was also included in the Exhibition of Western Books (Rounce & Coffin Club).

___DESCRIPTION: Quarter brown cloth with tan paper boards, alphabetical illustrations in orange on the front and rear boards, light brown paper spine label with orange lettering, fore-edge uncut, title page with orange illustrations, historiated orange initial capital, illustrations printed in orange and black throughout, some in the margins and some within the text, with five folding facsimiles on brown and grey paper tipped in throughout; Van Dijck and Thorne Shaded types on Strathmore Pastelle paper, quarto size (11.25" by 8"), pagination: [i-iv] 1-27 [28] [1 colophon], one of 325 copies, unnumbered, signed by Jack Stauffacher on the colophon.

___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, a few faint stray marks to the rear board, else fine.
