Stammheim

London: Anthony d'Offay Gallery, 1995. Richter, Gerhard. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of an unspecified edition, octavo size, 63 pp., signed by Gerhard Richter. Fine / fine. Item #19052304

German artist Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) produced artwork in a myriad of aesthetics and media throughout his lengthy and successful career; his works have been shown in numerous exhibitions and retrospectives worldwide, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and in the Venice Biennale several times. He works with diverse materials such as paints and glass, creating photorealistic as well as abstract imagery, and his paintings have sold for some of the highest prices on the art market.

This volume contains twenty-three paintings, reproduced at the actual size, by Richter in response to the imprisonment and deaths of members of the Rote Armee Fraktion (Red Army Faction), a militant far-left group in West Germany, in the Stammheim Prison near Stuttgart, Germany. The paintings were done on pages from "Stammheim: The Case Against the RAF" by Pieter H. Baaker Schut; Richter obscures and reveals different parts of the text with thick smears of colour, creating a surface that both hints at meaning and defines more questions to be answered.
