The development of literary modernism included many renowned writers, one of the most prominent being Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), a French poet and merchant who began writing at a very young age, and ceased writing at a young age, twenty-one; Rimbaud's poetry has influenced a variety of writers, artists, and musicians, such as André Breton, Jack Kerouac, Patti Smith, and Bob Dylan.
"Illuminations" is Rimbaud's last work, first published in 1886 in the literary magazine "La Vogue", which predominately consists of prose poems; the work has been translated numerous times since its publication, this time by American poet John Ashbery (1927-2017), an often-controversial writer who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1976 for his collection "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror". The book also features a giclée print by Ashbery, tipped in at the back of the book, of his collage "Promontory".
