n. p. . Kamstra, Jerry. Limited Edition. No binding. No. 114 of 150 signed and numbered copies, signed by both Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Jerry Kamstra. Fine. Item #19040701
This broadside announces a poetry reading featuring renowned poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti (b. 1919) and artist and writer Jerry Kamstra (b. 1935) at the Catalyst, a landmark nightclub in Santa Cruz; the poster is designed by Kamstra, who is also a fixture of Santa Cruz culture, organising the Santa Cruz Poetry Festival in 1972 and promoting the work of Beat writers. Ferlinghetti, a prominent poet in the San Francisco Renaissance, started the bookstore and publisher City Lights in San Francisco, and had a vital influence on the Beat poets.
The poster is in the quintessential 1970s style, showing a kneeling woman, crowned with flowers and holding a garland of the same, with a bluebird poised as though to take flight behind her. The artwork by Kamstra and Rice (whom we were unable to trace) features small, hand-coloured areas of blue, and is a gorgeous commemoration for an inspired event of poetry and literature.
