Bernhard August "Hardie" Gramatky (1907-1979), a reputable artist working primarily with watercolours, was employed as a cartoonist at Disney before he quit to pursue his own artwork, and his paintings have been exhibited in the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; he wrote and illustrated several children's books, the most famous of which is "Little Toot".
This delightful book has never been out of print, and has inspired numerous adaptations, including an album with the "Little Toot" song, released by Capitol Records, which was the first children's record to reach the 1,000,000 sales mark (n. b., info from Wiki).
