The Tempest

London: Chapman & Hall, Ltd., 1908. Woodroffe, Paul. Hardcover. Quarto size, 141 pp. Very good. Item #19032210

English book illustrator and stained-glass artist Paul Woodroffe (1875-1954) provides illustrations for this lovely edition of Shakespeare's "The Tempest", with seventeen tipped-in colour pieces that beautifully depict the magic and mystery occurring throughout the play. The composer, Joseph Moorat (1864-1938), contributes musical compositions inspired by lines from the play, and these songs are interspersed throughout the book, a fascinating interplay between music, art, and poetry.

This book is charming in so many ways; the lovely gilt decorations on the front and spine, the ethereal decorated endpapers, and the seventeen colour illustrations tipped onto heavy dark green paper, three of which are double-page and so present in a somewhat unusual manner - altogether a lavish production which honours the Bard of Avon.
