Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) was a prolific writer, best known for his contributions to the fantasy and horror story magazine "Weird Tales", alongside such writers as H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, and his contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos; these fourteen stories are Smith's fifth collection to be published by Arkham House, a few years after Smith's death.
The dust jacket art by Frank Utpatel matches the dark and mysterious tone of Smith's stories; Utpatel created numerous imaginative illustrations for science fiction and fantasy publication, and his work is particularly associated with the writings of August Derleth.
