Boston: New York Graphic Society, Facsimile Edition [printed by Lawton and Alfred Kennedy], 1977. Adams, Ansel; Angelo, Valenti. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 777 of 950 copies, elephant folio size, pp., signed by Ansel Adams. Fine. Item #19031201
"Taos Pueblo", a collaboration between renowned photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984) and nature writer Mary Austin (1868-1934) has been called "the greatest pictorial representation of the American West" and marked a transition in Adams' career to his "signature sharp-focused images of Western landscape" (n.b., info and quotes from Wiki). Originally printed in 1930 by the Grabhorn Press, "Taos Pueblo" was issued in a small edition of 108 copies and contained original photographs of the pueblos and Southwest United States by Adams.
This publication by brothers Lawton and Alfred Kennedy is the facsimile edition of that seminal work, done forty years later; collectible in and of itself, it is a lovely reproduction of a significant work illuminating this part of the Southwest. Ansel Adams has signed this facsimile edition (the original was signed by both Adams and Austin).
The facsimile includes the woodcut decorations by Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), a highly regarded designer, illuminator, and decorator of books over a career that spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and the Book Club of California; the decorations are reproduced from the original and perfectly complement the photography and essay.
