Erie, Pa: Chas. F. Adams, ca. 1885. Hardcover. Folio size, 894 pp., in German. Very Good. Item #19031102
This impressive Bible, printed prior to 1890, is replete with engravings and chromolithographs, illustrating the text throughout; the engravings have a wonderful depth and detail of line, exquisite renderings of the characters that populate the Old and New Testament. Many of the illustrations are by Gustave Dore; of the full-page illustrations, many are chromolithographs which are amongst the cleanest and brightest we have seen, most with original tissue guards.
Preceding the biblical text are over 130 pages of information to accompany the reading of the Bible, with illustrations within the text on practically every page, including a chronological timeline, eight pages of colour maps of the regions of Egypt, the Holy Land, and lands around the Mediterranean Sea, a biography of Martin Luther, encyclopaedic information on an array of subjects found in the Bible, including coins and animals and plants found in the region, with copious amounts of illustrations, and twelve pages of illustrations from the Scriptures, with six black-and-white engravings on each page. The information forms an engaging academic read, over and beyond what is found in a traditional Bible.
This volume includes not only both the Old and New Testaments, but also the Apocrypha. The traditional pages provided for the owners to fill in family information (weddings, births, etc.) follows the Apocrypha, with all pages blank (unused). At the back are four pages title "Family Portraits", with spaces to place photographs; they are all empty except for one, which has a photograph of a young man, possibly a tintype, of unknown date.
The volume retains the two original metal hinged clasps which can be closed (we do not recommend such as it does put a slight strain on them); and the binding, although with some rubbing, is remarkably fresh. A lovely example of a Victorian-era family Bible, stuffed with gorgeously detailed illustrations.
