The Screwtape Letters

London: Geoffrey Bles: The Centenary Press, 1943. Hardcover. Tenth printing, duodecimo size, 160 pp. Near fine / very good. Item #19011101

C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) examines the nature of temptation in his epistolary novel "The Screwtape Letters", in the form of letters written by the senior demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a junior demon still learning how to lead humans astray. At once a work of satire and Christian apologetics, the book investigates tenets of Christian theology, in relation to temptation and sin; Lewis dedicated the book to his friend J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973), best-known for his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, who was a member of the informal literary group the Inklings, along with Lewis.

This volume is the tenth printing of Lewis's book, published in 1943 (exactly one year after the first printing), and features many positive reviews on the dust jacket, for what was to become one of Lewis' greatest works.
