Washington: Government Printing Office, 1907. Hardcover. Octavo size, 293 pp. Near fine. Item #18121225
The earthquake and subsequent fire in San Francisco in 1906 had devastating effects on the city; most of the city was destroyed and it is estimated that approximately 3,000 people died, the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California history (n. b., info from Wikipedia). This volume contains reports detailing the effects of the earthquake and fire, examining the damage to individual buildings as well as materials and methods to rebuild more earthquake- and fireproof structures; the second half of the book contains black-and-white plates depicting the destruction from the natural disasters.
Originally issued in wraps, this book is bound in contemporary cloth, and it came to us with a small booklet of editional photographs of the destruction of the city. We doubt the booklet was issued with the book; however, we are offering them together.
