A Moral Fable-Talk

San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1987. Gheeraerts, Marcus. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 425 copies, octavo size, 355 pp., in a custom binding. Fine. Item #18112302

This collection of fables, published by the Arion Press, takes its text from Arthur Golding's (ca. 1506 - 1606) translation of the Latin "Mythologia ethica", originally published in 1579 by Arnold Freitag, and includes facsimiles of the etchings done by Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder (ca. 1520 - ca. 1590) for that edition. These fables use animals as a simple source of learning and to convey a didactic moralism, and are accompanied by verses from the Bible, bringing the morals inward and creating a space for gentle reflection.

The etchings of Gheeraerts have been reproduced in this volume, and as some of the early plates had been printed hastily and unevenly, the facsimiles have been retouched to remove ink scumming and to restore missing lines. This particular volume is in a custom binding, full white paper designed to look like parchment, rather than the full or half leather produced by the Arion Press, and is housed in a custom clamshell box.
