St. Louis: Published by the Author, 1892. 5th Edition. Hardcover. Duodecimo size, 458 pp. Very good. Item #18110103
"The Life of a Book Agent" is the autobiography of the bookseller Annie Nelles, telling of her escapades and travels as she tries to make a living peddling books; although there is some dispute as to which parts are fiction and which are true, nonetheless the book provides an in-depth look at a determined woman who searches for success in a business that, at the time, was largely dominated by men. At times melodramatic, Nelles' autobiography is filled with poignant moments as she struggles to make a living, to rise out of poverty, and to be independent.
This volume is the fifth edition of Nelles' book, and, unlike the earlier editions, is presented as though a friend of the author were telling the story of her life. This volume is seemingly scarce in the trade, with this copy is in better condition than usually found.
