Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) is one of the most widely read French authors, whose works have been translated into over one hundred languages and have been adapted numerous times to the screen and stage; he is best known for his novels of high adventure and intrigue such as "The Three Musketeers", "The Count of Monte Cristo", and this work, "The Man in the Iron Mask". This volume is The Limited Editions Club's publication of "The Man in the Iron Mask", and includes illustrations by French painter Edy Legrand (1892-1970), who contributed illustrations to many books; his watercolours here are reproduced with hand-coloured pochoir.
___DESCRIPTION: Full blue cloth, gilt fleurs-de-lis on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, frontispiece a watercolour by Edy Legrand captioned "Le rois soleil", title page in blue, red, and black with red fleurs-de-lis, text in double columns separated by a blue ruled border, watercolours by Legrand throughout; monotype Baskerville type, Curtis white wove paper, octavo size (9.5" by 6.75"), pagination: [i-viii] ix-xiv [xv-xvi] 1-430  [1 colophon], one of 1500 copies, this number 351, signed by Edy Legrand on the colophon. With an announcement for the book, one sheet, and the prospectus, one sheet folded once. In original glassine wrapper, and slipcase covered in dull gold paper with title inside a blue rectangle on the spine and blue cloth edges around the opening.
___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings. The prospectus and announcement are near fine, clean, the prospectus has one horizontal crease and the top right corners are creased. The glassine wrapper is very good plus, clean overall, slight edge wear with chipping to the top edge and head of the spine, and a small (half-inch) closed tear to the bottom of the front panel. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean overall with some minor soiling, with some rubbing to the edges of the boards and spine.
