[Vancouver, BC, Canada]: Heavenly Monkey, 2016. Maru, Jane. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 32 of 50 copies, quarto size, 62 pp., signed by Harold Budd and Jane Maru. Fine / fine. Item #18092005

The musical compositions of Harold Budd (b. 1936) have a minimalist and avant-garde approach; his poetry also has a soft minimalist quality. "Aurora Teardrops" is a collaboration between Budd and artist Jane Maru, who first worked with Budd to create short films accompanied by his music, and who provides batik paintings on silk for this publication, reproduced here on drafting vellum paper, to interweave with the poems. Maru's vibrant colours contain an intensity and "form the vibrant visual core for "Aurora Teardrops" (per Heavenly Monkey's website). The overall effect is a movement between image and text, and ". . .[r]adiating out from between the lines, the bones of the ribcage, love from the resonant heart of a soulful man" (per the introduction).

The introduction is written by David Sylvian (b. 1958), an English musician and frontman of the new wave group Japan during the 1970s, who collaborated with a variety of artists over his long career to create music in numerous styles such as jazz, ambient music, and art rock. The introduction is itself poetic, and examines the writing of Harold Budd and its relationship with his music.
