Beyond the Moon

Santa Barbara, California: The Schauer Printing Studio, Inc., 1928. du Bouillier, Jean. Hardcover. Quarto size, 47 pp., inscribed by Jean du Bouillier. Very good. Item #18090804

"Beyond the Moon" is a collection of poems by Florence Perkins, dedicated to the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlink (1862-1949), whom Perkins met in 1919 as he was lecturing in America; the two subsequently began a long correspondence (n. b., info from the Royal Library of Belgium's website). Ethereal and dream-like, Perkins's poems contain a cosmology and mystery breathing between the lines, and they encompass a pathos as expansive as the universe that is referenced in the text.

The poems are accompanied by black-and-white illustrations by Jean du Bouillier, who conveys the magic and mysticism of the poems with an Art Deco style of illustration. The illustrations are tipped in throughout the book and provide a meditative pause between poems.

___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black cloth with rainbow-coloured paper boards, black-and-white illustration (also found inside the book) by Jean du Bouillier on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine, top and bottom edges rough cut, rainbow-coloured front endpapers and metallic green, red, and blue patterned rear endpapers, many signatures unopened, seven black-and-white illustrations by du Bouillier, tipped in against brown paper, throughout; quarto size (10.5" by 8.25"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-41, inscribed by Jean du Bouillier on the first flyleaf. In addition to the inscription on the first flyleaf, on the second flyleaf there is a notation by du Bouillier "Orange Blossoms from Paris gardens" with off-setting from what we presume were the original orange blossoms laid into the book.

___CONDITION: Volume is very good overall, internally near fine; with bright colours, a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and bright with many signatures unopened, and the only prior owner markings we see are the inscription and notation above; minor soiling to the boards, some rubbing to the corners and edges of the boards, bottom corners gently bumped, front hinge cracked (but text block is still strong), and some minor foxing to a few of the interior pages. Even with its exterior faults, still a lovely book and somewhat scarce in the marketplace.

___POSTAGE:  International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
