This four-volume set contains instructions on how to grow plants in various indoor and outdoor settings, as well as descriptions of various plants, vegetables and flowers alike; each book is filled with detailed wood engravings of the plants and tools used in gardening, to create a thorough reference for both beginners and experts in the field.

Each volume also has an elegant frontispiece produced from chromolithrographic plates, showing beautiful illustrations of ornate flowers and gardens.

___DESCRIPTION: Full green cloth, ruled borders and flower illustration in gilt and black with title in gilt on the front board, gilt lettering and flower illustrations in gilt and black on the spine, publisher's device inside black ruled border surrounded by flower illustration on the rear board, bevelled boards, slate grey endpapers, each volume with a chromolithographic frontispiece featuring different kinds of flowers, all with tissue guards, black-and-white wood engravings of various plants throughout each volume; octavo size (9" by 6.75"), pagination: Volume I: [i-iv] [1] 2-380 [381-390]; Volume II: [i-iv] [1] 2-380 [381-390]; Volume III: [i-iv] [1] 2-380 [381-396]; Volume IV: [i-iv] [1] 2-384 [385] 386-396 [397-412]. Volume IV has a leaf pressed between pages 148 and 149.

___CONDITION: All volumes are very good, with strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, and the interiors are clean and bright; all the boards are clean overall with a few spots of soiling, some rubbing to the edges of the boards, the corners, and to the heads and tails of the spines on all volumes, all corners gently bumped, minor foxing to the front and rear flyleaves of all volumes, some off-setting from the leaf pressed in Volume IV, there is a prior owner name written in pen on the verso of the front free endpaper in Volume I, dated "1887"; the front and rear hinges of Volume I were professionally restored, the volume is now strong and sturdy.
