San Francisco: The Book Club of California, 2016. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 286 of 300 copies, octavo size, 295 pp., signed by Robert Bringhurst, with supplements and prospectus. Fine. Item #18082789

Palatino is a typeface named after Giambattista Palatino (c. 1515 - c. 1575), an Italian master of calligraphy, and is based on the humanist types of the Italian Renaissance; the forms of Palatino type mimic the strokes of a calligraphy pen. This book provides a richly detailed account of Zapf's typographic endeavors, the creation of the Palatino typeface, and the related typefaces created after.

This publication from The Book Club of California encompasses the history of the typeface Palatino, designed in 1949 by Hermann Zapf (1918-2015); Canadian poet and typographer Robert Bringhurst (b. 1946) brings his energy and expertise to the subject and has filled the book with gorgeous photographs of type as well as several pages of letterpress-printed specimens of type, in Latin, taken from the first book of Ovid's "Metamorphoses". Included also are two leaflets with Greek and English translations of the Latin text, letterpress printed by Richard Seibert.
