Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) was a Spanish author best known for the novel "Don Quixote", an extremely influential book written during the Spanish Golden Age of literature; "Dialogue of the Dogs" is a short story originally published in Cervante's collection "Exemplary Stories". It is a conversation between two dogs, Cipion and Berganza, who suddenly have the ability to speak; Berganza uses the opportunity to tell of his life with different owners, revealing much about the relationships between dogs and men, while Cipion interrupts with advice on how to narrate a story, reflecting Cervante's own views of storytelling.
This edition by the Foolscap Press contains illustrations by Peggy Gotthold, with two dioramas on the insides of the front and back covers, to create three-dimensional scenes reflecting the text of the story. The text is translated by inimitable translator Harriet de Onis (1899-1969), best known for her translations of many Latin American writers and for bringing the Latin American literary canon into the eye of the American public.
