San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2011. Hyman, Miles. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 66 of 300, quarto size, 236 pp., signed by Miles Hyman, with prospectus. Fine. Item #18082712
Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) was an American writer best known for her works of horror and mystery, especially her novel of supernatural horror "The Haunting of Hill House"; "The Sundial" is a story of the residents of the Halloran house, and the story begins with the funeral of Lionel Halloran, master of the house. The novel examines the repercussions of his death and its effect on the characters; Diane Johnson (b. 1934), eminent American novelist, essayist, and critic, writes in the introduction to the Arion Press edition, "Its timeless quality has ensured that the pleasures of this small delicious novel have endured. Like 'Animal Farm', it has something permanently important to say about human society, in this case about fear, power, and leadership."
Included also are full-colour illustrations by Miles Hyman (b. 1962), grandson of Shirley Jackson and whose drawings and paintings have been featured in galleries in Paris, New York, and Geneva; here his illustrations complement the darkly comic tone of the text, and demonstrate his expertly smooth mark making and attention to detail.
