New York: Cassell & Company, Limited, ca. 1887. Thayer, Emma Homan. Hardcover. Folio size, approx. pp. Very good. Item #18080902
Emma Homan Thayer (1842-1908) was a botanical artist and author; an avid painter, Thayer created "Wild Flowers of the Pacific Coast" with watercolours of her observations and impressions of flowers accompanied by her diaristic account of her camping experiences and travels.
This volume contains twenty-four chromolithographs of Thayer's watercolours, with personal anecdotes from her encounters with the flowers in their natural setting around the Pacific coast, forming an intimate travelogue of the area. Some of the areas she includes are Monterey, Santa Rosa, Napa, San Jose, Pasadina [sic], and Yosemite.
___DESCRIPTION: Full tan pictorial cloth featuring white flowers against a sunset on the front board, blind-embossed patterned borders on the rear board, brown lettering and illustrations on the spine, all edges gilt, blue patterned endpapers featuring flowers, frontispiece a three-colour chromolithograph of buttercups, captioned "Butter-Cups", chromolithographs of flowers throughout; folio size (12.5" by 9.75"), pagination: approximately 110 unnumbered pages. Two specimens of pressed flowers, from a previous owner, are laid into the book. An elegant gift inscription from a prior owner, dated 1891, is written in pen on the front free endpaper, and a bookseller's ticket, "Weinstock, Lubin & Co / Sacramento, Cal.", is on the front paste-down endpaper.
___CONDITION: Very good, with a strong, tight text block, solid hinges (the front hinge professionally restored), the interior is clean and bright, the chromolithographs are clean with bright colours, and the only prior owner marking we see is the gift inscription mentioned above; boards are mostly clean with some minor soiling, some rubbing to the edges of the board and corners and to the head and tail of the spine, minor foxing to the front and rear flyleaves and front free endpaper, and a single leaf with a closed tear in the bottom margin, to which a prior owner applied some old cello tape. Even with its few faults, still a lovely example of California wildflowers drawn over 125 years ago with narration from the same time.
___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually large and heavy volume and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details.
