Winnie-the-Pooh

New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, (1926). Shepard, Ernest H. First Edition. Hardcover. First U.S. edition, duodecimo size, 173 pp. Very good +. Item #18072101

"Winnie-the-Pooh" was created by English writer Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956) and is the first volume of stories centering around this beloved character, inspired by his love for his son, Christopher Robin Milne (for whom the character Christopher Robin is named). The character of Winnie-the-Pooh originally appeared in Punch magazine in February 1924 and was first named "Mr. Edward Bear" by Milne's son; other characters in the stories were drawn from his son's toys.

This volume is the first U.S. edition, a lovely collection of stories about the inhabitants of Hundred Acre Wood that have entertained and delighted children for generations. With illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard (1879-1976), an English artist and book illustrator who created drawings for several of the Winnie-the-Pooh books; his gently playful illustrations are irrevocably connected to the Pooh books and provide a charming aesthetic to this classic collection of children's stories.

___CONDITION: Volume is better than very good; top corners are straight, with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some very light soiling to the boards, some rubbing to the top and bottom corners, the bottom edges of the boards, and the head and tail of the spine, bottom corners are slightly bumped, some age-toning to both endpapers, the title page has a small closed tear (about one-half inch) at the top margin, and a few of the guttars are just beginning to slightly separate. Despite some outer wear, this is an attractive copy of an endearing series of children's stories.
