New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, c. 1936. Wilson, Edward A. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 13 of 280 copies, octavo size, pp., signed by Archie Binns and Edward A. Wilson. Fine / near fine. Item #18060501
A choice excerpt from American author Archie Binns' (1899-1971) 1934 novel, "Lightship", being a nautical romance that takes place on a trip up the Columbia River. This edition was privately printed especially for friends of the author and artist and was never offered for public sale. It features four lovely illustrations in three to four colours by Edward A. Wilson (1886-1970), who "illustrated more than seventy books, mainly classics, and many about the sea" including "Two Years Before The Mast" and "Robinson Crusoe" (N.B., quote from Mr. Wilson's NY Times obituary).
___DESCRIPTION: Original quarter white cloth and rust-red cloth covered boards, stamped in rust-red on back, stamped name on the front free endpaper of Elliott C. Farnsworth (likely the co-founder of a medical device company, Corbin-Farnsworth, in Palo Alto; with partner Tom Corbin, Farnsworth developed the country's first defibrillators, pacemakers and heart monitors), four tipped-in colour plates including frontis, several illustrations in text; printed on gray paper, octavo size (8.25" by 6"), [1-6] 7-67 pp., number 13 of 280 copies, signed by Archie Binns and Edward A. Wilson. In the original clear acetate dust wrapper and housed in original blue-green paper slipcase.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, internally bright, text block is tight and square with solid hinges, covers are clean, no rubbing or fraying, and other than the name mentioned above, free of prior owner markings; a bit of offsetting from the illlustrations, else fine, clean and crisp. The acetate dust jacket is near fine, clean, with some light overall wrinkling and a few very minor spots of edgeware. Slipcase is very good plus, sturdy, mostly clean with a few stray soil marks, and with a few tiny spots of rubbing at the corners and a split developing at the tail of the spine, still very good. A lovely privately printed production of a story centered around water, an important part of the lives of both the author and artist.
