[San Francisco]: [Paul Elder and Company..."printed by thier Tomoye Press, under the direction of John Henry Nash"], [1911]. Hardcover. Twelvomo size, [16] pp., in a custom binding (Lily Hart, Pasadena). Near fine. Item #18052203

A charming book of quotations all based on the theme of "Charity", in its original and best sense - that of showing kindness towards others. Beulah Warner (of whom we could find no trace) selected the quotes, which are from authors as diverse as Longfellow, Wordsworth, George MacDonald, Joaquin Miller, Marcus Aurelius, Maeterlinck, Goethe, Walt Whitman, and "John the Unafraid" whose apt quotation is: "Happy is the man who does the duty which is next to his hand, for he has wisdom to know that he can lift more of the burdens near him than of those he cannot reach."

Issued in wraps with a matching envelope (see the web site of Paul Elder for pictures), this volume was custom-bound between boards by a certain "Lily Hart, Pasadena California". We cannot, alas, find any information on Ms. Hart, but she did a charming job with this volume, it being of quarter parchment with paste paper boards, the title hand-painted on the parchment in an exquisitely delicate hand, the initial letter in red.

This may have been one of the last books Nash worked on for the Tomoye Press, as he departed it partway through 1911 to re-join the Taylor brothers, thus creating the firm of Taylor, Nash & Taylor, uniting "three men whose interest in quality printing was exceptional." (N.b., from Robert D. Harlan, "John Henry Nash, The Biography of a Career", p. 17.)
