Tales of Passed Times, Written for Children by Mr. Perrault [Perrault's Fairy Tales]

London: Selwyn & Blount Ltd., (1922). Austen, John. Hardcover. Octavo size, 64 pp. Very good +. Item #18041727

Charles Perrault (1623-1703) created many beloved fairy tales such as "The Sleeping Beauty", "Cinderella", and "Little Red Riding Hood"; his work formed the beginning of a new literary genre, the fairy tale, and these stories have had immense influence on subsequent writers (such as the Brothers Grimm) and have been adapted countless times as operas, ballets, films, and plays.

This collection of Perrault's fairy tales contains illustrations by English illustrator John Austen (1886-1948), who illustrated many books such as "Hamlet", "Tristram Shandy", and "Madame Bovary"; his style was at first influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and was later shaped by the Art Deco movement. With their delicate line work and bright colours, Austen's illustrations bring these well-known tales to life for the enjoyment of both children and adults of all ages.

The volume includes many of childhood's favourite tales, such as "Little Red Riding Hood", "The Fairy", "Blue Beard", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Puss in Boots", and "Cinderella", among others.
