English writer Charles Reade (1814-1884) published "The Cloister and the Hearth", a historical novel based on the life and family of the Dutch humanist Erasmus, in 1861; this volume is an excerpt from the novel.
The volume was published by The Golden Cross Press, the imprint of Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), a highly regarded designer, illuminator, and decorator of books over a career that spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and the Book Club of California. It is inscribed by Valenti Angelo to Carl J. Smalley, a sales representative in eleven Western states for twenty-five publishing companies (n. b., from The Publisher's Weekly, Volume 188, Part 4, 1965).
___DESCRIPTION: Full blue paper, printer's device in blind on the front board, fore-edge uncut, title page with decoration in blue and black hand-illuminated by Valenti Angelo, red initial capital and decorations in blue on the first page of text by Angelo; duodecimo size (7.75" by 5"), 10 unnumbered pages, one of 100 copies, unnumbered, inscribed by Angelo "To Carl J Smalley / with best wishes / Valenti Angelo" on the front free endpaper.
___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; spine and top edge are sunned, very light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the corners, and a few spots of soiling to the rear free endpaper.
