Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) is considered one of most significent of the modernist writers, and a key figure in what is known as the "Theatre of the Absurd"; winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969, he is best known for his play "Waiting for Godot". "All Strange Away" is a short work of prose, written using stream of consciousness and a surreal depiction of memory.
This limited edition contains drawings by the inimitable illustrator Edward Gorey (1925-2000), whose distinctive style is evocative of a mystical, gothic Victorian era, and his vast body of work includes over one hundred books written by himself, as well as those by many well-known authors such as T. S. Eliot, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, H. G. Wells, and Virginia Woolf (n. b., info from the Edward Gorey House website). Here Gorey provides small, pen-and-ink drawings in the margins, eery and mysterious shapes that unfold in unconscious depths of the human psyche.
